(The Silence of the Palace) 1994
Genre : Drama
Born in servitude, the daughter of a servant, Alia, was destined to be a slave as her mother and grandmother were. She’s born to serve men. By turning to the talents of her own body, Alia finds the strength to free herself. As the film begins, Alia is 25 and a small-time professional singer. After the humiliations of her boyfriend as he forces her again to abort her pregnancy, she revolts against her life and her lover of 10 years. The announcement of the death of Prince Sid’Ali, in whose house she was raised, plunges her into her past. As she revisits the deserted palace, now silent and dilapidated, the memories of her girlhood flood back. Moving from one setting to another – the gate, the courtyard, the gazebo, the basement hideout where she met her lover – she recalls the scenes which took place there and begins to piece together not only her own life but her mother’s as well. One gnawing silence for Alia is her mother’s refusal to reveal the identity of her father. Though the older women counsel Alia to stifle her voice and curiosity, Alia learns to sing. The night when she publicly breaks silence with the revolutionary anthem of Tunisian independence forges a new destiny for her.
